The North Texas swimming and diving team wrapped up its first meet of the season Friday afternoon in Denton against Texas Christian University and the University of the Texas Permian Basin. It was the first time this year the team competed against other schools.

To determine placements in the pentathlon, swimmers’ times from all events were tallied together, and the person with the lowest combined score won. Overall, the Mean Green fared well, as seven North Texas swimmers finished in the top 10.

Junior breast stroke and individual medley swimmer Sarah Vaisse led the way for the Mean Green, taking home first place with a combined time that was 14 seconds ahead of the second place swimmer.

“She swam times that are competitive in the middle of the season with strokes she doesn’t normally do,” interim head coach Brittany Roth said. “She was happy [and] I was happy. She’s been taking what she’s been doing every day in practice and really trying to get better, really trying to learn. [After] putting it all together here today, I’m excited for what her season is going to be like this year.”

Roth also liked what she saw from junior butterfly and breast stroke swimmer Sydney Buckley. Buckley finished fourth overall, and is excited for what the rest of the season holds.

“From here on out, it just goes down to getting more time in the pool,” Buckley said. ““We’ve been training for three weeks, so you can’t expect too too much.”

North Texas now gets a week to prepare for its next meet against the University of Houston.

And after her first-place performance, Vaisse is looking forward to getting back in the pool.

“I am super excited for the upcoming season,” Vaisse said. “We all did awesome. I really like the mentality and how we cheered for each other. You could feel it, you know? It was awesome.”
