After losing a 4-0 shutout against the University of Louisville Friday at home, the Mean Green tennis team came up short again in its 4-3 home loss to the University of Denver.

With only one junior and no seniors on the team, Lama said he thinks the youth of the team was costly in this meet. He said he hates using inexperience to describe his team and it’s no excuse for not closing out.

“In these last two matches, I think maybe a little inexperience showed,” Lama said.” “We didn’t do what a veteran team would’ve and that’s not letting up when you’re in the drivers seat.”

In doubles, Mean Green freshman Alexis Thoma and sophomore Kamilla Galleva first defeated Denver junior Michelle Garpenlov and senior Caroline Schnell 8-3.

In the second match, Denver sophomore Kathryn Hughes and freshman Sonja Radosevic defeated junior Kseniya Bardabush and freshman Anastasiya Shestakova 8-6.

UNT came up victorious in the third match and got the doubles point when sophomores Dane Joubert and Agustina Valenzuela held off senior Natalie Dunn and freshman Maureen Slattery 8-7.

Thoma, who also won her singles match, said she’s acclimating well to college tennis and gets more comfortable every week.

“Each week I just gain confidence within each match, and I really don’t focus on results, just the process,” Thoma said.

In singles, Shestakova defeated Schnell (6-2, 6-1) and Thoma got the second UNT victory and third overall point with her win (6-4, 6-1) against sophomore Evy Van Genechten.

However, Denver got the other four singles victories to get the overall win. Head coach Sujay Lama said he’s happy with the effort of his team, but they have to learn how to close out wins.

“This is our seventh straight match where we’ve had incredible, great fight,” head coach Sujay Lama said. “I’m really happy with and really proud, but today I feel we let one slip away. I mean we had it right there, and we have to learn to close the deal,” Lama went on to say.

The Mean Green will host its next match against Liberty University at 11:00 a.m. March 15 at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
