The No. 67 Mean Green tennis team fell to Dallas-Fort Worth area rival University of Texas at Arlington in a 4-0 sweep Wednesday evening.

UTA swept UNT in doubles play, with freshman Angeles de los Rios and sophomore Elizabeth Thoms defeating sophomore Agustina Valenzuela and freshman Alexis Thoma (8-5) in the first match that ended. UTA junior Giada D’ortona and sophomore Christine Foote followed that match with a win against freshman Anastasiya Shestakova and sophomore Dane Joubert (8-4).

The matchup between freshmen Ekaterina Tugarinova and Astrid Gehre against UNT juniors Kseniya Bardabush and Franziska Sprinkmeyer did not finish due to the previous two UTA victories.

“Today was a very tough day because the wind was very strong,” Valenzuela said. “I usually have positive energy, but I was struggling so I was a little bit negative.”

The Mavericks also swept the Mean Green in singles, with Thoms victorious against Bardabush (6-2, 6-5). Freshman Astrid Gehre defeated Franziska Sprinkmeyer (6-4, 6-4), and freshman Angeles de los Rios defeated sophomore Agustina Valenzuela (6-4, 6-2).

The other three singles matches were called off after there was no possible way for UNT to win.

“You have to give UTA credit, they played a great match,” associate head coach Jeff Hammond said in a Mean Green Sports recap. “We will regroup and be ready for another battle on Saturday.”

The Mean Green will look to end its two game skid against the University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners at 11 a.m. on April 5 at the Waranch Complex.
