Despite chilly and windy conditions, the Mean Green tennis team extended its winning streak to three games by beating Louisiana Tech University 4-1 on Saturday in Denton. This marked the first conference loss by Louisiana Tech this season.

“We just needed to stay composed,” head coach Sujay Lama said. “We knew they were a really good team and there was going to be moments where we had our runs. I thought we held it together in big moments.”

The Mean Green (8-8, 2-1) came out strong in doubles and defeated the Lady Techsters (12-5, 3-1) in each of the three matches.

The Mean Green duo of junior Kseniya Bardabush and junior Franziska Sprinkmeyer started it off with an 8-1 win. Freshman Alexis Thoma and sophomore Kamilla Galieva followed that up with an 8-2 win while freshman Anastasiya Shestakova and Dane Joubert also registered a 7-2 victory.

“I think this after coming back from earlier losses in the beginning of the season we’ve really started to play as a team and support each other and just come out with big energy,” Thoma said.

UNT didn’t let up in singles as sophomore Agustina Valenzuela won her match against Louisiana Tech senior Melanie Urvoy (6-2, 6-2) to start it off. Shestakova won the deciding match for UNT against Lousiana Tech’s Marta Sramkova (7-6, 6-1).

“We were all prepared and ready because we knew that they were going to be fighting until the last point,” Valenzuela said. “We know that they are all the time cheering and we went into the court mentally prepared.”

The Mean Green have now won three straight since starting the season 5-8 and Lama said he likes where the team is going.

“We’re starting to peak,” Lama said. “We normally do at the end of March and early April. That’s when we play our best tennis and I think we are starting to find our form.”

Next up, the Mean Green will be back at home on March 29 to take on the University of Memphis at 11 a.m.
