In front of a sold out, standing room only home crowd, the Mean Green volleyball team won its seventh straight match, defeating Texas Christian University in straight sets (25-19, 25-18, 25-22) Sunday night.

The Mean Green (18-9, 8-5) lead throughout the first set and took it easily, as senior outside hitter Hannah Forst and junior outside hitter Carnae Dillard recorded 11 combined kills in the set.

“We knew how competitive this team was,” Forst said. “We knew coming out of the gate we had to have our foot on the gas, otherwise we were not going to be successful.”

The second set featured much of the same for the Mean Green as three of its first four points came via kills from Dillard.

While TCU attempted to work its way back into the match, making it a 16-14 match at one point, the Mean Green went on a roll and took the set handily.

The third set was more competitive as TCU took a 15-11 lead midway through the set, forcing head coach Andrew Palileo to use his first timeout of the set. Out of the timeout the Mean Green took four straight points to get even at 15, forcing TCU to call a timeout of its own. Dillard took control of the match from there, finishing with a game high 21 kills.

Dillard, who is currently third in the nation with 522 total kills this season, said part of her success is staying composed during games.

“I’ve been working on staying calm, I’m not getting too emotional or hyped up,” Dillard said. “You’ll see it some throughout the game, but just learning to slow the game down, it really helps me.”

Palileo also said that Dillard has looked like a different player, and it has shown during the seven game winning streak.

“Carnae has been more confident this year, she’s been a good all-around player, she has expanded her game,” Palileo said. “That’s what we have been talking about, to continue to prepare her for volleyball if she wants to play professionally, this year is just another step in her process to make her a better player.”

Next up, the Mean Green will take on the conference leading University of Texas – San Antonio Thursday at home. The game is set for 7 p.m.

“We want to go in and beat them,” Dillard said. “Going into the conference tournament, they are undefeated (in C-USA) but I think they don’t want to face us. We want to play them, and show them we are not scared.”
