Mean Green volleyball defeated on the road

The Mean Green volleyball team competed in day one of a two-day tournament at the Utah Valley Invitational and fell to Utah Valley University in five sets.

North Texas (2-4) began strong at the beginning of the first set against the Wolverines (1-4) with a 7-4 lead. Junior middle blocker Amanda Chamberlain and freshman right-side hitter BrynCaitlin Walker capitalized on the lead by bringing the ball down across the net. Although the Mean Green offense was dominating, it was the many attack errors by Utah Valley that secured the set for North Texas 25-14.

Unfortunately, the Mean Green were unable to bring that power into the second set. The Wolverines held the lead the entire set, its lead dwindling in the last few points as North Texas attempted to mount a comeback.

Freshman libero LekaLeka Kiner-Falefa responded to her teammates kills with an ace to try to get the score closer, but it ultimately failed with the women losing the second set 25-20.

After being rattled by the second set loss, North Texas struggled to gain a lead. The women were unable to gain separation and eventually fell behind after Utah Valley took a 9-7 lead.

Despite this, the Wolverines’ lead was not substantial, and the Mean Green caught up to tie the set at 22. Again, kills by Chamberlain and junior right-side hitter Alexis Wright were crucial down the stretch as North Texas pulled away 27-25.

That would be the last time North Texas would win a set against Utah Valley, however. Even though the fourth set was extremely close until the final point, the Mean Green fell short, losing 25-23.

Utah Valley gained a considerable lead going into the fifth set, jumping out to a quick 7-0 advantage. Junior outside hitter Chelsea Abii took advantage of her opportunities and killed several balls during this set. She and her teammates attempted to close the gap the Wolverines created, but North Texas was overall unable to rally and fell during the final frame.

Next up: North Texas takes on San Jose State University and Southern Utah University, beginning at 11:00 a.m. CT and 5:30 p.m. CT respectively, on Saturday during day two of the Utah Valley Tournament.
