This weekend the UNT Volleyball team will make the trip to San Marcos, Texas for the Texas State Delta Zeta Classic. This tournament provides new competition for the Mean Green. They’re set to face Wichita State University (1-2), Abilene Christian University (0-4), and the host team, Texas State Uniersity (2-2).

The Mean Green is currently 3-1 on the season with their only loss coming against a nationally ranked team in the University of Missouri. The team will play even more tough competition this weekend, which head coach Andrew Palileo said will be good for them.

I really feel like it is good to play top teams in order to prepare ourselves for later in the season.” Palileo said. “The older girls have done a really good job mentoring the younger players and showing them the way things are supposed to be.”

Junior outside hitter Carnae Dillard is coming off the Conference USA Player of the week award. Dillard was the first player of the new season to receive this award after she recorded 59 kills and a .304 attacking percentage during week one of the season. She said she is happy with the team’s start this season.

It is a great start for our team.” Dillard said. “It shows that we are starting where we left off last year with people getting recognition and awards already, it means we are off to a good start to the season.”

Due to the play of Dillard and the rest of the squad, the Mean Green was able to go 2-1 at their own North Texas Invitational and earn a road win against Stephen A. Austin. The Delta Zeta Classic will be the second of four tournaments the team is scheduled to play in before conference play. They will also play in the Mean Green Classic and Kansas Tournament, and senior defender Eboni Godfrey said the tournaments will help the team.

I think these tournaments really help us play well with each other.” Godfrey said. “They really help us get the structure of the games down and be able to perform in pressure situations. Practice is tough but it doesn’t compare to the high intensity that game give us.”

The Delta Zeta Classic will begin on Friday for the Mean Green when they take on Wichita State at 5:00 PM. It will conclude on Friday with a double header against Abilene Christian and Texas State.
