The Mean Green volleyball team ended its conference opening weekend on a low note, as the team got swept by the University of Texas at San Antonio on Sunday afternoon (22-25, 22-25, 21-25).

The Mean Green (10-5, 1-1) kept it close in each of the three sets, but could not get the stops necessary to get the victory. The team found itself up 21-18 in the first-set, but errors cost the lead and, eventually, the match.

“We had our opportunities, but we just didn’t take advantage of them,” head coach Andrew Palileo said. “We didn’t close out very well today and on the road you have to close those.”

The Mean Green tried to make a run in the middle of the third set, but UTSA (7-7, 3-0) was able to close out the set and take the match. The players felt that the lack of concentration at the end of sets was one of the reasons for the loss.

“We did have great focus up until the last five points of those first two sets and it was really frustrating,” senior outside hitter Hanna Forst said.

UTSA managed to get a .211 attacking percentage for the game and held the Mean Green to a .177 attacking percentage.  The Mean Green had 16 errors for the game and Forst said that had to be fixed going forward.

“We made too many errors in crucial times and that is absolutely what bit us in the butt,” Forst said.

The team was led by junior outside hitter Carnae Dillard with 13 kills but she also had seven errors for the match.  Forst added eight kills and senior defensive specialist Eboni Godfrey had 13 digs.

The Mean Green will return home for a match with Rice University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
