The Mean Green volleyball team beat Rice University on the road in straight sets (20-28, 25-19, 25-20) Friday night to extend its win streak to six games.

“This was a great win for us on the road,” head coach Andrew Palileo said. “It really shows the girls that what we are working towards is in reach but we are still treating each game like it is a very important match. Which every match actually is.”

North Texas (18-9, 9-5) started the match with a very competitive, back and forth first set that saw senior outside hitter Hanna Forst and junior outside hitter Carnae Dillard combine to score half of the team’s first set points.

“If we were going to even the series between us and Rice we really would have wanted it to be tonight,” Forst said. “Tonight we were really able to execute and I feel as if those who were out there playing tonight really had a unity we haven’t seen yet and we are starting to come together at the right time.”

In the second set, Rice (20-7, 10-3) tried to hang with the Mean Green but lost its lead halfway through the set which put North Texas up two sets to none. The third and final set was then dominated by the Mean Green. The team took the lead from the beginning, and never trailed for the rest of the set to secure the win.

“Every time we get a kill or a block we get a wave of energy,” freshman middle blocker Amanda Chamberlain said. “We were able to build momentum throughout the match by continuing to do those things over and over again.”

Chamberlain also finished with a very impressive nine kills on eleven total attacks giving her a .818 attacking percentage. Chamberlain had nine kills on 11 total attacks for the game. Palileo said this game gives the team a big momentum boost.

“It definitely is a huge confidence booster,” Palileo added. “Hopefully we can carry it into our next match because it seems as if everything we have been working on is finally coming together down the stretch here.”

The Mean Green now heads home for its final three games of the season starting with a match against Texas Christian University on Sunday at 5 p.m.
