Mean Green vs. FIU: First Half

October 16
16:41 2010

It’s homecoming night here at Fouts Field, as the Mean Green take on the Florida International Golden Panthers.

14:53 Q1: Wes Carroll and the FIU offense start its first drive of the game at its own 22. 1st-and-10.

12:43 Q1: Well that didn’t take long. Honestly, I think I say that on the first drive of every game. Apparently it never gets old to the Mean Green defense. UNT gambled in the secondary, attempting to pick off the ball. That turned out to be for the worst, as Carroll hooked up with Greg Ellisgson for a 50-yard TD pass. FIU 7, North Texas 0.

12:30 Q1: Brelan Chancellor broke off a huge run on the ensuing kick-off, taking the ball to the FIU 23. Chancellor was close to making history, as the last time someone returned a kick-off for a touchdown was Broderick McGrew in 1998. 1st-and-10.

11:26 Q1: The Mean Green were unable to fully maximize on its excellent field position. UNT goes three-and-out, settling for a 37-yard field goal by Zach Olen, which was good. FIU 7, North Texas 3.

11:26 Q1: FIU starts its drive on its own 20. 1st-and-10.

7:11 Q1: The Golden Panthers drove the ball down to the UNT 13, but the Mean Green defense was able to limit FIU to a 30-yard field goal. So far, FIU is having no problems running the ball. And the Mean Green are committing stupid penalties yet again. On that last drive, K.C. Obi was called for a blatant roughing the passer on 3rd-and-18, which resulted in an automatic first down. FIU 10, North Texas 3.

7:05 Q1: UNT will start its drive at its own 10 after a block-in-the-back on the return. 1st-and-10.

5:05 Q1: That drive didn’t go well. At all. Baine was sacked on third down, forcing a long fourth down. T.Y. Hilton took the punt back to the UNT 20, giving the Golden Panthers a really short field. 1st-and-10.

2:36 Q1: FIU continues to run the ball all over the Mean Green, leading to another scoring drive. Wayne Times takes the ball in the end zone off a direct snap for a 10-yard touchdown run. The Golden Panthers have scored on every drive so far. FIU 17, North Texas 3.

2:29 Q1: Baine and company take over on the UNT 24, trying to get some rhythm going on offense. 1st-and-10.

00:48 Q1: Another drive, another three-and-out. UNT fails to pick up a first down, giving the ball back to FIU. The Mean Green still hasn’t picked up a first down all game. 1st-and-10 at the FIU 17. I smell a blowout.

Through the first quarter, UNT has 2 total yards of offense.  Best stat of the night. And by best, I mean embarrassing.

13:45 Q2: It keeps getting worse and worse for the Mean Green. T.Y. Hilton gets past everybody, making himself available for a 43-yard touchdown pass by Carroll. Looks like my senses were right. It’s going to be a very, very long night. FIU 24, North Texas 3.

13:38 Q2: The Mean Green will try to make this semi-interesting, starting its drive on its 15. Unfortunately, that may not be happening anytime soon.

9:56 Q2: UNT finally gets things going offense, picking up its initial first down of the game. The Mean Green were able to get as far as the FIU 35, but a big sack puts a halt to the drive. FIU will take over on its own 15. 1st-and-10.

4:26 Q2: After a long drive in time but not in distance, FIU punts the ball away to UNT, which will take over on its 12. The Mean Green defense was finally able to stop somebody on third down. In other news, this game isn’t exactly the most exciting game. Maybe that’s because UNT has done absolutely nothing to excite the dormant crowd. 1st-and-10.

2:49 Q2: Besides one drive, the Mean Green has been stagnant in the first half. Another three n’ out. FIU will take over on its 43.

00:53 Q2: FIU uses the pass on that last drive to inflict more damage to the Mean Green. The Golden Panthers stall at the UNT 16, knocking down a 33-yard field goal to extend the lead. FIU 27, North Texas 3.

End of first half: FIU 27, North Texas 3: This game is terrible from a UNT point of view. Offense isn’t doing anything. Defense really isn’t stopping anybody. Sounds like a recipe for a big, fat “L”.
