The Mean Green women’s golf team wrapped up its trip to the Fed-Ex Memphis Intercollegiate Tournament in Memphis, TN late Tuesday afternoon. The team finished in eighth place in its season opening tournament.

“Overall I was pleased with the way we played,” head coach Jeff Mitchell said. “With the young group of girls that we have this year it will take us into our second or third tournament before we can really get things going and have a solid tournament. I didn’t think we got what we should have out of our practice round. We didn’t get the ball up and down as well as we worked on.”

Sophomore Eji Kwon started the season off with her second career top-10 finish of the tournament after tying for eighth place with a third round score of 3-over par and a total score of 218. It was also Kwon’s fifth career top-25 finish.

“This tournament was not as competitive as others that I’ve played in, so I should have done a lot better than eighth place, “Kwon said. “Even though I ended the first day off in seventh place and overall in eighth I was a little bit disappointed. We should have learned more about the course in the practice rounds.”

Freshman  Devin Edwards barely missed a top-25 finish after tying for 27th place.

“This tournament was fun but a little nerve-racking at the same time,” Edwards said. “ I am pleased with my finish being freshmen and I hope to get better and we go further into the season.”

Junior Laura DeLeonardis finished the tournament tied in 58th place with a 239 total score. Senior Maraea Durie shot an eagle 2 during the second round of the tournament, but ended up finishing in 31st place for the tournament. Middle Tennessee State ended up winning the team title for the tournament.

The team will be back in action from Oct. 6-8 as they will play in the Price’s Give Em’ Five Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, NM.
