The Mean Green women’s basketball team played a close second half, but turnovers and foul trouble allowed the University of Tulsa to get the 79-63 win Wednesday night at the Super Pit.

Offensively, head coach Mike Petersen said the turnovers are killing them and they have to start making their shots behind the three-point line. The Mean Green (8-12, 2-5) only shot 37.5 percent on three-pointers for the game, compared to the 46.2 field goal percentage overall.

“We have to make those jump shots or they are going to clamp down on these two [Acheil Tac and Briesha Wynn],” Petersen said.

The Mean Green shortened the gap in the second half to one point, but the team’s own mistakes allowed Tulsa (10-7, 4-2) to extend the lead again. UNT’s fouls and turnovers built a deficit the team couldn’t overcome down the stretch.

“We put them on the line too much and we didn’t make the shots,” Petersen said. “It’s hard to win a game when your opponent shoots three times as many free throws as you.”

Junior forward Briesha Wynn led the team in scoring and shot 5-for-8 from the field. Sophomore Alexis Hyder added 14 points and 7 rebounds, while sophomore forward Acheil Tac had 12 points.

The problem was that their three leading scorers contributed to 12 of the 26 personal fouls for the Mean Green. In addition, Tulsa scored 17 points off UNT’S 14 turnovers.

“We lose sight of what our game plan is,” Wynn said. “What we need to do is maintain our focus and keep playing hard, and then everything will go our way.”

One of the biggest issues on defense was allowing Tulsa players to drive to the basket, as players felt the game plan wasn’t working as well as they thought it would.

“We struggled a little bit, we didn’t stay in front of them,” Tac said. “We had a game plan of trapping the post and they instead went baseline and got to the line.”

The Mean Green will now prepare for the game against the University of Alabama at Birmingham at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Super Pit.
