North Texas men’s basketball hasn’t won a game in almost three weeks.

The Mean Green (2-6) lost its first game home game since Thanksgiving 95-63 to Southern Illinois University in a matchup that was lopsided from the beginning.

In the second all-time meeting between North Texas and SIU (8-1), the Mean Green dropped its sixth game in a row in game one of the two teams’ back-to-back games.

Southern Illinois controlled the tempo of the game as soon as the contest started. The Salukis led the entire game after junior North Texas guard J-Mychal Reese scored a driving lay up to begin the game’s scoring.

After the opening Reese score, Southern Illinois’ got off to a 9-0 run to start the game before North Texas would be forced to call its first timeout to calm down the Saluki offense.

The pause in play didn’t help the Mean Green keep up with Southern Illinois, as the Salukis lead by double digits most of the first half before leading North Texas 40-23 at the half.

SIU scored 40 points in the paint as the North Texas struggled to protect the paint throughout regulation.

The Mean Green defense had trouble stopping senior SIU guard Anthony Beane Jr, who led the visiting team with 19 first half points.

Beane came into today’s matchup ranked 39th nationally in scoring with 19.9 points a game. The guard only missed one first half field goal and had 27 points throughout the game.

North Texas tried shooting from downtown to catch up to the SIU lead but only shot 14 percent in the first half from beyond the arch.

The Mean Green never got close to taking the lead in the second half. SIU played more aggressive in the paint, getting to the line more and scoring at the line more efficiently while the Mean Green shot 59 percent from the line and 11 percent from beyond the arch.

The 16 turnovers committed by North Texas cost the home team 20 points off turnovers. The Mean Green only held the game’s lead for 21 seconds.

The loss gives North Texas its fourth straight double-digit loss and its fourth straight loss at home. SIU has now won three straight since losing its only loss against the University of Texas at El Paso last week.

The Mean Green defense has been struggling lately, giving up 90 points to its last three opponents and losing by an average of 26 over the time frame.

North Texas is now 2-4 at the Super Pit after winning its first two games of the season with over 100 points a game.

The last time the Mean Green played a non-conference opponent twice in the same season was in 2008 against Sam Houston State University.

North Texas has a week to prepare to play the Salukis again at 7:05 p.m. next Friday in Carbondale, Illinois.
