The Mean Green men’s basketball team lost its second straight game, falling to the University of Texas at El Paso 83-60 on the road Thursday night.

UTEP (20-9, 12-5) came out firing on North Texas (14-15, 8-9) and never looked back. The Mean Green trailed 38-22 at halftime, and were down by as much as 27 in the first half.

The Mean Green had a better second half, going from 41.7 percent shooting to 45.5 percent shooting, but it wasn’t enough to mount a comeback against the Miners.

While shooting 43.9 percent from the floor, the team couldn’t match up to UTEP’s 59.6 shooting. UTEP also shot 50 percent from three-point range and outrebounded North Texas 29-26. The Miners also had five blocks.

Junior forward Muhammed Ahmed provided 16 points on the night and promising freshman forward Jeremy Combs added 11 points.

“I was just trying to keep the right mindset and the right attitude throughout the whole game, but this game we didn’t come out from the start, they threw the first punch,” Ahmed said. “ We got to put the first punch on the next team we play.”

Junior guard Maurice Aniefiok said this team has proven it can be good, and needs to focus on gaining its momentum back.

“We feel like we can play anybody in any league, and we can beat anybody,” Aniefiok said. “We don’t want to make no excuses, we just want to focus on the next game.”

The team has one more game in the regular season on Saturday against the University of Texas at San Antonio. A win would clinch the No. 6 in the Conference USA tournament for the Mean Green.

“We got one more game left, we’re one game away from .500, and we’ll just see about getting some momentum going into the conference tournament,” Benford said.

The game against UTSA will tipoff at 7 p.m.
