North Texas completed the sweep of its two game home stand on Thursday morning, defeating Mississippi Valley State University 87-74. With the win, the Mean Green (4-7) matched its longest winning streak of the season and kept the Delta Devils (0-13) winless on the year.

For the second straight game, North Texas was led by junior guard Deckie Johnson, who broke his own career high in points he set on Monday night. Johnson ended the game with 26 points and shot 60 percent from three-point range, finishing two three pointers shy of tying the North Texas record for threes in a game.

The Mean Green also got contributions from its other usual cast of characters, including sophomore forward Jeremy Combs and freshman guard Ja’Michael Brown. Combs recorded his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Brown added 12 points, two rebounds and two assists.

Both teams came out of the gates sloppy, as North Texas committed five turnovers in the first five minutes of play. After a quick timeout from head coach Tony Benford, the Mean Green started to heat up, getting out in transition and running the floor.

A key change in momentum came midway through the first half when Reese found Combs on a fast break, who finished the possession with a one handed alley-oop. The play forced the Delta Devils to call timeout and gave North Texas a much needed lift on offense. It also paved the way for the Mean Green to take a 45-28 lead into halftime.

Things did not get any easier for Mississippi Valley State in the second half, as the Mean Green limited the Delta Devils to 37 percent shooting from the field. Mississippi Valley State failed to get anything going offensively all game, frequently being forced into late shot clock situations and bad shots.

Despite their offensive struggles, two members of the Delta Devils ended in double figures, led by junior guard Marcus Romain, who finished with 21 points. But the suffocating defense by North Texas was too much for Mississippi Valley State, as the M managed to shoot just seven percent from beyond the arc. As a result, the Mean Green never relinquished its first half lead and got the victory.

Next Up: North Texas travels to Creighton University on Monday, Dec. 21. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
