North Texas opened a two game home stand on Monday night with a victory over Nicholls State University 78-60. With the win, the Mean Green (3-7) snapped a seven game, month-long losing streak dating back to Nov. 16.

In command for the entire game, head coach Tony Benford’s squad trailed for only one minute and eight seconds. Led by junior guard Deckie Johnson, who scored a career high 17 points, North Texas quickly jumped on the Colonels (3-5) to the tune of a 19 point halftime lead.

The Mean Green was also able to stymie the Nicholls State offense, holding the Colonels to 60 points, the lowest total by a North Texas opponent this season.

Presented with a 2-3 zone for most of the first half, Nicholls State dared the Mean Green to shoot from the perimeter. But North Texas was able to knock down 47 percent of its first half shots, and as a result, four Mean Green players finished in double figures.

The Colonels changed their defensive scheme in the second half, switching to a man-defense in hopes of running North Texas off the three point line. The move worked, as the Mean Green’s three point percentage dipped from 44 percent in the first half to a 27 percent clip by game’s end.

Despite the drop, North Texas adjusted and found other ways to score. Junior guard J-Mychal Reese had 14 points and Jeremy Combs poured in 19 points, both helping maintain North Texas’ lead during a few cold spells. Reese’s ability to facilitate the offense helped down the stretch, as the junior dished out four assists and often got other players involved in the offense.

Next Up: North Texas hosts Mississippi Valley State University in the final game of its home stand Thursday morning. Tip-off is set for 11:30 a.m.
