Men’s basketball streak snapped, receive first loss to Sooners
The Mean Green’s (8-1) nation-leading eight-game win streak ended as they traveled to Norman to play the Oklahoma Sooners (6-1) and losing 73-57.
North Texas had their worst shooting performance of the season, shooting 19-of-69 from the field and 6-of-26 from behind the arc.
Heading into halftime, the Sooners led by a score of 29-27, but the Mean Green quickly fell behind in the second half due to solid play from Oklahoma’s frontcourt.
“We laid an egg,” head coach Grant McCasland said in an interview with meangreensports.com. “McNeace is really physical around the rim and changed a lot of shots and made it tough. We got squeezed but we were right there but it spiraled out of control late in the second half.”
Oklahoma senior center Jamuni McNeace recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Mean Green took their first lead of the game in the second half with 17 minutes remaining in the game, but shortly after that the Sooners regained the lead and didn’t let up. North Texas 26.3 percent in the second half.
“We caught them on an off-night,” McCasland said. “I liked what we did to start the second half but just couldn’t sustain it with their size and length and us not hitting shots.”
Junior guard Ryan Woolridge led the Mean Green with 17 points, along with five rebounds and an assist — shooting 6-of-15 from the field.
Junior guard Roosevelt Smart also put up double digits on the night, shooting 4-of-11 from the field for 13 points to go along with three boards in his second game back from injury.
Next up: The Mean Green travel to Terre Haute and face off against Indiana State on Dec. 5.
