The Mean Green men’s golf team wrapped up the David Tom Intercollegiate in Baton Rouge, Louisiana Sunday afternoon. As a team, North Texas finished the two-day tournament tied for sixth place with the University of South Alabama.

“The team had it going for 15 holes today,” head coach Brad Stracke said. “We did improve overall this tournament.  The guys worked hard on their putting and it paid off. When these guys get more comfortable in tournament situation we will improve dramatically. We will continue to work on putting drills and ball striking”.

Senior Juan Munoz had a successful day on the course with a top-five finish. Munoz tied for fifth place with a third round score of 3-over par and a total score of 223.

“I thought my performance was pretty good,” Munoz said. “I have been hitting the ball well and I can see the results. It is a tough golf course and keeping it in play is very important. I made a couple of mistakes that cost me but was able to bring it back with good putts.”

Mean Green sophomore Cory Churchman also had a good tournament with a top-25 finish. Churchman tied for 20th with four other players with a total score of 228. He started the tournament with a 5-over par at the end of the first round with a score of 77, 8-over par in the second round with a score of 80, but bounced back in the third round to go 1-under par.

“I had a rough two first days.  I hit the ball pretty well, just had trouble on and around the greens,” Churchman said. “I lost confidence and trust in my game the first day that caused me to lose some strokes, but regained it in the last round and played much better to finish in a tie for 20th, which is respectable for the way I played”.

The Mean Green will return to the course Oct. 20-21 to take part in the Jim River Classic in Ruston, Louisiana.
