After a strong start to the Jim West Intercollegiate in Austin, Texas, the Mean Green men’s golf team suffered through a two-hour lightning delay Tuesday before finishing in fourth place with a team score of 296.
The event was the team’s final preparation for the Conference USA tournament, and the Mean Green entered coming off a solid showing at the Aggie Invitational.
The team headed into the final day of the tournament in a tie for third place after shooting its best opening round of the season with a seven-under 281. Fueled by the dynamic duo of freshmen Thomas Rosenmueller and Ian Snyman, the Mean Green was in solid positioning after day one.
Rosenmueller and Snyman finished the first day tied for ninth individually after shooting two-under par 142s through the first two rounds. Rosenmueller shot a five-under par 67 in the first round, but was unable to match that mark through the remainder of the tournament.
As a team, the Mean Green took a step back in the second day. Despite entering the tournament ranked No. 58 in the golfstat.com rankings, the team fell from contention in the tournament with a sub-par final round.
Snyman and Rosenmueller finished tied for 11th place with a combined three round score of 216. Junior Cory Churchman had the most successful final round, shooting one-over par 73 to finish tied for 15th place overall.
Junior Alejandro Villasana shot a four-over par 76 on Tuesday and finished tied for 27th place. Sophomore Michael Cotton shot a 226 throughout the tournament to finish 45th.
The Mean Green will have two weeks off before the C-USA championships from April 24-27 in Texarkana, Texas.
