The No. 38 ranked Mean Green men’s golf team successfully defended its Sun Belt Conference Championship this week in Muscle Shoals, Ala., defeating Georgia State University by five strokes, 871 to 876.

The Mean Green came from behind to claim its championship after trailing by one stroke after the first two rounds. Senior Rodolfo Cazaubon finished the tournament in a tie for first place after shooting a 214. Cazaubon lost in a playoff with Lane Hulse of the University of South Alabama.

“I thought I played pretty well,” Cazaubon said. “I just had one bad mistake, but overall it was a good performance. I took it [the playoff] alright. I know that winning as an individual is special, but it is even better to win it as a team, so that was more important.”

Seniors Carlos Ortiz and Curtis Donahoe finished the tournament tied in the No. 5 spot at 219. Ortiz was able to birdie five holes Wednesday on his way to shooting a three under 69.

Head coach Brad Stracke said the course was very difficult during the final round due to bad weather, but the team played great.

“The difference was having seniors who know how to play in pressure situations perform at a high level,” Stracke said.

Cazaubon said maintaining his focus and ignoring the ever-changing weather conditions was key to his and the team’s success.

The Mean Green men’s golf team joins the UNT tennis and soccer teams in finishing their time in the Sun Belt Conference as back-to-back champions.

The men’s golf team won back-to-back championships since 1974 and 1975, when it played in the Missouri Valley Conference.

With its victory this week, the Mean Green advanced to the NCAA Regional round, which will take place from May 16 to 18.
