Freshman forward Tony Mitchell racked up his third double-double of the season in the UNT men’s basketball team’s 84-67 win over Western Kentucky (5-13, 1-4) Thursday at the Super Pit.

Mitchell, who notched 21 points and 13 rebounds, started slow as two early fouls kept him on the bench with four first-half points.

Junior guard Roger Franklin and freshman guard Jordan Williams picked up the slack combining for 25 first half points. Franklin ended the night with a career-high 20 points, while Williams ended up with 16 points.

“We understand what we have to bring to this team and what we need to bring to this team, not just as a whole and as a unit, but individually,” Franklin said.

The Mean Green (10-8, 3-2) held a 41-37 lead over the Hilltoppers at the end of the first half, but stretched the lead to double figures in the second half.

Defensive intensity was the difference for UNT in the second half, Mitchell said.

“Coach [Johnny Jones] told us you can either be a jack or an ace,” he said. “You got to be an ace. We were all aces out there on defense and we just executed on offense.”

WKU freshman guard Derrick Gordon kept the Hilltoppers close in the first half with 13 points. The first-year guard ended the game with 18 points.

The Mean Green knew Gordon would be a good shooter and it was a better defensive effort that contained him in the second half, Jones said.

Turnovers were one of the Mean Green’s bigger problems. The Mean Green had 15 turnovers, five of which belonged to Mitchell.

“Because we play so fast if we can keep our turnovers to anywhere around 12, because we’re a fast-paced basketball team – if we can keep it around that number we can possibly have a chance to have some success,” Jones said. “We would like it to be much lower but you have to sometimes take some good with the bad.”

UNT will hit the road for its next contest Saturday at 1 p.m. to play the ULM Warhawks.
