UNT will host a reception honoring fraternity and sorority members for their outstanding community service at 3 p.m. Monday at Willis Library in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The event is a collaboration between Willis Library, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the Office of Greek Life and the Multicultural Center. One student from each of the 15 fraternities and sororities was chosen by their organization’s president to be recognized for their contributions to the community.

“The model for MLK Day is a day of service,” music sophomore Troy Elliott said, “We decided to honor those in Greek organizations specifically because of Dr. King’s connection to Greek life.”

King was a member of Alphi Phi Alpha during his time at Morehouse College, in Atlanta, Ga. in the 1940s.

Following the honoree reception, students and faculty can march to Fred Moore Park located at 500 S. Bradshaw St. to meet community members as part of an annual event hosted by the City of Denton. The march will continue to the MLK Jr. Recreation Center at 1300 Wilson St. for a ceremony including dinner and guest speakers at 5 p.m.

To further commemorate King, the UNT Dining Services will offer a menu of diverse foods from around the world Monday through Friday, Jan. 24 in Kerr Hall Cafeteria.

Students have an opportunity to learn about King’s work and post messages about their own plans and dreams, along with his legacy on a ‘dream board’ on display in the cafeteria.
