The Mean Green women’s golf team was hindered by weather and tied for seventh out of 14 teams in the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Women’s Golf Classic yesterday, despite its first individual tournament win in more than two years.

UNT freshman Georgina Mundy, the tournament’s individual leader, picked up her first collegiate win and the first for the Mean Green since Kelsey Kipp’s win in the Rose City Invitational on Sept. 28, 2010. Mundy was ahead after both of the first two rounds and finished with a three-round total of 222 – five strokes ahead of the next closest golfer.

“I’ve been working really hard for [the win], so I’m really happy to finally get it,” Mundy said. “I hit really well throughout. I just kept my head down and it just came together as one.”

Head coach Jeff Mitchell praised the play of his freshman from Southampton, England, saying she stayed consistent across the two-day tournament.

“It doesn’t surprise me at all,” Mitchell said. “I knew she was a really strong player. She struggled a little bit through the season, but she has been steadily getting better and getting a little bit more comfortable and familiar. Sometimes it just takes a while to get comfortable that far away from home.”

Despite Mundy’s success, the rest of the team never gained momentum in the cold and windy conditions in Hot Springs Village, Ark., that caused multiple delays – one of which lasted more than two hours.

“The actual weather wasn’t terrible until the wind kicked in,” junior Chaslyn Chrismer said. “The wind dropped the 40-degree weather to 20-degree weather, which was brutal.”

Sophomore McKenzie Ralston tied for 28th with a total of 241, junior Taylor Kilponen tied for 49th with a 248 total, Chrismer tied for 56th with a score of 251 and freshman Keegan Moore tied for 69th with a score of 258.

The Mean Green’s next tournament, the SMU Invitational April 5 to 7, is the final one before the Sun Belt Conference Championships begin.
