Affadavit: `Zimmerman confronted Martin’

SANFORD, Fla. – George Zimmerman, the Neighborhood Watch volunteer arrested Wednesday in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, faced a judge for the first time Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, a probable cause affidavit filed in the second-degree murder case failed to disclose much new evidence.

The four-page affidavit did, however, offer a few new pieces of information. It says that “Zimmerman confronted Martin,” an apparent contradiction of Zimmerman’s version of the events.

It also says Trayvon’s mother identified the screams for help heard in a 911 call as those of her son.

Martin tried to run home, the affidavit says, but was followed by Zimmerman.

The affidavit goes on to say that “Zimmerman disregarded the police dispatcher” who told him to stop, and “continued to follow Martin who was trying to return to his home.”

Zimmerman’s first appearance began just after 1:30 p.m.

UT begins Austin campus-wide tobacco ban

AUSTIN — The University of Texas in Austin has gone tobacco-free in a healthy move that could add up to more cancer research money.

UT previously banned smoking in residence halls, during class and at other indoor areas.

The expanded campus-wide policy, citing health and environmental concerns, took effect Monday. School officials announced the change Wednesday, as approved by UT System officials.

More than a dozen temporary tobacco use locations have been set up on the UT flagship campus, through next February, to help ease into the updated ban.

The Cancer Research Institute of Texas in February announced future funding would be contingent on tobacco-free policies by participants.

UT has received about $30 million from the group. School officials say having a tobacco-free campus could mean an additional $88 million.
