There’s a new late night talk show in town, including a live audience and a band on the side. Think Conan O’Brien’s show with a Denton twist.

“Late Night at North Texas” premieres this Thursday on ntTv (Charter 22, Verizon Fios 46) at 9 p.m.

For those who want to watch the show live, seating is free and first come, first serve in Studio A at the Radio, Television, Film and Performing Arts Building on Thursdays at 7 p.m.

Phyllis Slocum, radio, television and film lecturer and station manager for ntTV, said there are few universities in Texas with a late night talk show that is directed, produced and staged completely by students. She said the live audience aspect is unusual too.

“An experience like this offers students a reel that literally takes them into the real world,” Slocum said. “It seemed like burning the candle at both ends.”

Coralee Trigger, a converged broadcast media senior and executive producer of “Late Night at North Texas,” said the show’s main purpose is to entertain and bring the community together.

“We wanted to create something first and foremost for our reel, to practice producing,” Trigger said. “But it was also really to create something that the university could embrace and the community could be proud of.”

Trigger said the idea for a late night talk show was pitched during a budget meeting for “North Texas Now,” a daytime segment at ntTV, but was considered “too edgy.”

It wasn’t until January, when she and a few others from “North Texas Now” started seriously working on it, that the show began to take form. They produced the pilot episode in March.

Trigger said 22 students volunteered for the first season, which consists of five episodes.

They will film the show live to tape on Thursdays at 7 p.m., and that episode will air a week later at 9 p.m.

On Oct. 8 they launched a fundraising campaign with the website to raise $3,100 for a new backdrop, since the current one has a picture from downtown Dallas in the early 90s on it.

Trigger said she hopes the new backdrop will help them look more professional.

As of Tuesday, $565 has been pledged for the project. The campaign ends on Nov. 7.

The group also filmed a 2 minute and 28 second parody of the popular song “Gangnam Style” and posted it on all of their social media platforms to garner attention for the show.

“The ability to have that kind of quick turnaround and to really play off trending and pop culture is something that we’re really going to be able to embrace with the late night show,” Trigger said.

Brandon Becvar, a radio, television and film senior, will host the show along with radio, television and film senior Cody Graham as his sidekick.

Becvar said they try to emulate Conan O’ Brien and Johnny Carson whenever they do the show.

“I’m hoping to get a little more recognition for the station, for the university,” Becvar said. “We’re one of the first universities to offer a late night talk show, so we’ll stand out.”
