On Wednesday, new volleyball head coach Andrew Palileo made the 16-hour drive from Ohio to Denton. Tomorrow, after only three practices with his new team, he will coach the Mean Green at the University of Texas-Arlington Spring Tournament.

“Regardless, it’s still volleyball,” junior middle blocker Courtney Windham said. “We’re going to go out there and work our butts off. We’re going to do some things and it’s just trial and error right now.”

UNT (3-1) will face four teams in Arlington – Texas Christian University at 9:30 a.m., the University of Oklahoma at 10:30 a.m., Texas Tech University at 1:00 p.m. and Baylor University at 2:00 p.m. The matches are determined by the first team to win two games, abbreviated from the usual best of five format.

Though none of the teams are conference opponents for the Mean Green, they are local rivals. UNT beat UTA 3-2 on Aug. 28 and Baylor 3-0 on Sept. 18, while losing to Texas Tech 1-3 on Sept. 3.

Windham said winning is not as important as getting in shape and getting adjusted to the team’s new coach. Palileo is taking over a successful program, but feels like there are improvements to be made.

“There are just little nuances I think we can get better at defensively,” Palileo said. “Be a little more sound, for the most part.”

Freshman outside hitter Carnae Dillard said she doesn’t expect dramatic differences from the newly added coach so early on.

“[We will] get some of the stuff he wants us to work on,” Dillard said. “He’s not necessarily going to come in and change everything. That’s impossible to do in three days.”

Instead, the Mean Green players will learn more about their new coach and his style.

“I’m laid back in some ways, but I’m pretty intense when it comes to doing the little things correctly,” Palileo said. “I have mean looks. Though I’m not necessarily a yeller or a screamer, but I do expect a lot.”
