Although not as noisy, busy or crowded, New York Sub Hub remains the closest you will to get to the Big Apple in Denton.

The walls are covered with New York memorabilia —license plates, subway maps, photos of the Statue of Liberty and famous baseball players for the New York Yankees.

“I think a lot of stuff on the walls actually came from New York,” said Sub Hub employee Greg Holland. “That support strap for passengers to hang on to is from an old subway car.”

News clippings from September 11, 2001, hang alongside pennants for New York sports teams and quotes from former Yankees player Joe Dimaggio.

Customers can peruse copies of The New York Timesor New York Post while waiting on a sandwich.

In true New York fashion, New York Sub Hub provides plenty of options and offers more than 30 different sandwiches. About three years ago, Coney Island hot dogs were added to the menu.

Holland said the number 20, or All Stops on the New York Sub Hub sandwich, is a customer favorite. He said it is easy to see the appeal in a sandwich crammed with six different cold cuts.

New York Sub Hub has been a fixture in Denton for more than 30 years, when owner Ken Christiansen moved from New Jersey to run the first location on Avenue C in 1979.

Since then, the restaurant says it has sold over 3 million sandwiches, according to the Denton Record-Chronicle.

Newer locations have opened in McKinney and Corinth, and a restaurant on both University Drive and Loop 288.

English junior Lisa Waldon said she eats at New York Sub Hub about once a week.

“All the New York stuff on the walls is pretty cool,” Waldon said. “But really, I just like a good sandwich. I like New York, but I like sandwiches more.”
