A white BMW caught fire Thursday afternoon in the parking lot P, across the street from the Radio, Television and Film building, exploding multiple times before Denton firefighters extinguished the blaze. There were no injuries reported.

Denton Fire Department officials declined to comment, but UNT spokeswoman Margarita Venegas said the university does not suspect foul play. The accident is still under investigation.

“I was in the art building when the [car] went up and I heard the police before I saw the smoke,” sculpture senior Christopher Parsons said. “I wanted to see what that was about so I took a peek around and that thing was in flames already.”

The owner of the vehicle was integrative studies senior Mary Daub. She said the fire started when she walked up to the car and opened the door.

Daub said the firefighters told her that from what they could see, the car seemed oxygen deprived, causing the flames to ignite.

Theatre junior Candace Alexander said she was coming out of Potbelly Sandwich Shop on Hickory Street when she saw a plume of smoke and smelled burning rubber from the exploded vehicle.

Spanish senior Allyson Weber had a similar experience walking out of her chemistry class.

“I was on the corner over by the Art Building when I heard something pop,” Weber said. “Then I saw the smoke come up. I was about to cross the street when I saw the flames.”

Weber said she saw the car on fire with black smoke around it, and a few minutes later, the car exploded three times. The front and back windshield blew out before a final explosion occurred from inside the car, Weber said.

The car appeared to be totaled. After it was towed away, there were still melted parts left on the pavement.
