When reports began pouring in of a shootout in downtown Dallas, I was sitting in Denton. As a news guy, I did what any journalist would, quickly jumped in The Slab, and sped 80 to 100 miles an hour down Interstate 35 to get downtown.

When I got back to work, the editors put my nose to the ground. Minutes turned to hours. Hours turned to days. Days became entire lifetimes. I was consumed in the coverage of the Dallas police shooting, playing what small role I could as an intern at a newspaper at the center of the world’s attention.

By the time I left the newsroom, I could smell myself. And the attack I felt in my heart – the Dallas shooting – taking place in the city I spent so much time as a kid, broke me down on the Friday afternoon drive back up I-35, this time with my tail between my legs.

So when I first heard about Pokemon Go, I assumed my Texas peers, friends and colleagues were too wrapped up in the reality of what just occurred to be bothered by a fake world they’ve been wrapped up in since childhood.

But, as you well know, I was wrong.

I’m not trying to be that guy. There is no shade between these lines. But to the folks too consumed by Pokemon Go, you’re making millennials look bad — as if we needed any help.

There’s nothing that makes older generations more irate than seeing a bunch of young people on their phones. And there’s no criticism that makes me sigh harder than hearing a bunch of older people complain about us being on our smartphones, which, they say, are eroding the social standards we as a society have long held dear.

They’ll say that we millennials are so busy with our smartphones that we live obliviously on this earth. In this case, I cannot argue.

I find it funny how so many people can ask, why we are so messed up as a society, while people in their early ’20s run around looking at their phones, on the search for Pokemon they’ve been following since childhood, and avoiding the tragedy around them.

Don’t get me wrong, I get it. Pokemon is among the most resonating brands of our era. If consumer behavior class taught me anything, it’s that playing on a demographic’s nostalgia brings out the wallets. And I understand that sometimes the news is too hard to handle. I get that, believe me.

At the same time, please think more about the world around you. We’re already reading reports of young people being injured — two guys fell off a cliff trying to catch Pokemon — because they’re consumed by another world while walking aimlessly in the real world. And don’t get bit by a snake, like this kid, please.

This is natural selection, people! Don’t let smartphones be the death of you. We’re too divided already to have people being killed because of video games. Just pay a little more attention to the world around you. That’s all I’m asking.
