Senior duo Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze continued their historic fall season last Wednesday when they became the first Mean Green doubles team to advance to the Round of 16 in the 2018 National Fall Championships in Surprise, Arizona.

North Texas defeated the No. 24 nationally ranked doubles team from Oklahoma State 7-5, 6-1 during the first day of tournament play. The Mean Green faced a tight set in the first game but pulled away to defeat the Cowgirls in the second set.

The Mean Green were coming off an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championship victory — which was also a school first — and came into the National Championships with a high level of confidence.

During the Round of 16, the duo’s run at a fall national championship came to an end with a 7-5, 6-3 loss to a team from California-Berkeley.

The turning point in the loss was when North Texas was up 5-2 at a break during the first set and could not finish off the Golden Bears, despite having six chances to clinch the set. California managed to take the first set away from North Texas and ran with the momentum to advance to the quarterfinals.

“We got off to a great start but did not execute when we had the opportunity to close out the first set,” head coach Sujay Lama said in an interview with meangreensports.com. “Once we let them off the hook, we were not able to match their energy and aggression.”

The tennis team’s fall season is complete, and the spring dual meet season will start on Jan. 15 as the Mean Green host Abilene Christian.
