On March 11, the North Texas football team hired Galen Scott, who previously accepted a position with Old Dominion two months ago, to fill the position of linebackers coach, according to a press release from the North Texas Athletics office. After the departure of former Mean Green linebackers coach Jeff Koonz, who accepted a job with Ole Miss, Scott is expected to fill the vacancy. 

“Being able to add someone at the caliber of coach Scott at this stage of the offseason is key for us,” Littrell said. “He has great experience throughout his career and his leadership will be important in the development of a young linebacking corps. We are excited to get him to Denton ahead of spring practice and bring him into our family.”

As a player, Scott was a three-time FCS All-American linebacker with Illinois State and graduated as the all-time leading tackler for the Red Birds in 2001. He would then start off his coaching career by spending eight years coaching with his alma mater, including three seasons serving as their defensive coordinator. During his tenure with the Red Birds, he trained five-straight conference defensive player of the years.

Scott accepted a job with Tulsa as their outside linebackers coach and also worked as a secondary coach during his two-season stint with the Hurricanes.

He then got hired on with Memphis to serve as their linebackers coach. Scott would spend six seasons with the Tigers before being promoted to be Memphis’ defensive coordinator in his last season. He also helped facilitate the Tigers to three bowl games during his tenure.

Scott would then join Virginia Tech and serve as the co-defensive coordinator as well as the safeties coach for two seasons. Scott helped lead Virginia Tech to two bowl games along with a ten-win season in 2016 that saw the Hokies win the ACC Coastal Division and beat Arkansas in the Belk Bowl.

Prior to Scott joining Old Dominion in January, he coached defensive backs at Rowlett High School in Texas in 2018.

Scott will look to train up a Mean Green linebacker core who recently graduated former standout conference linebackers Ejodamen Ejiya and Brandon Garner.
