North Texas soccer improved its record to 4-1-1 and remained unbeaten at home as they put on an offensive showcase en route to a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers.

It was an extremely hot day for soccer in Denton, but head coach John Hedlund said the Mean Green actually benefitted from the heat.

“I know we had the advantage today because of this heat,” Hedlund said. “Pittsburgh isn’t used to this heat, so we wanted to take it to them with our substitutions and our depth. They were dying come second half, and this is a good win for us.”

It didn’t take the Mean Green long to score, as sophomore midfielder Elle Marie Defrain blasted a goal off the top post just 1:49 into the game, making the score 1-0.

“That early goal was huge, and we continued to build on after that,” Hedlund said.

Later during the 19th minute of the game, senior Aaliyah Nolan curved a crosser around a Pittsburgh defender and to the outstretched foot of senior Taylor Torres, who knocked it in for the Mean Green’s second goal.

Pittsburgh responded just two minutes later with a goal of their own to cut the North Texas lead to 2-1.

Then it was the Mean Green’s time to respond. In the 23rd minute, senior Lauryn Bruffett scored her first goal of the season on a pass from sophomore Brooke Lampe to put North Texas up 3-1.

Early in the second half, it was easy to tell North Texas was not letting up. Just 1:13 into the second half, Torres found freshman Olivia Klein to extend the Mean Green lead 4-1. The four goals scored is a season-high so far for North Texas.

After Klein’s goal in the second half, it was noted that she had three goals in just six shots on the season.

This was Torres’ second game of the season where she recorded both a goal and an assist.

“I felt like I played really good,” Torres said. “We wanted to get an early goal and we did. My goal is to score at least one goal every game. I haven’t been able to get one the last two games, but I knew coming in today that I would have a good chance to score. I’m glad we came out with the win.”

The defense has been absolutely stellar for North Texas this season as they have only allowed three goals in six games and have shut out three different teams.

One of the reasons for this success is senior defender Dominique James. She has both great speed and ball skills, which makes her a threat in the back end. Last week, Coach Hedlund even described James as one of the top players in the country at her position.

“Every single game I come out focused and ready to play,” James said. “I try and do the best that I can for my teammates and play for them. Even though we have a different lineup this year, I think we’re focused on playing for each other.”

The Mean Green will travel to Houston on Friday to take on Houston Baptist University. This game will be the beginning of a five-game road trip, which means North Texas will not be playing back at home until Sept. 30.
