Alabama Birmingham retained its first place spot in Conference USA after beating the Mean Green by a score of 29-21.

The Blazers defense sacked Mason Fine on North Texas’ first offensive play of the game, but Fine was able to connect with wide receiver Rico Bussey Jr. on a 55-yard touchdown pass early in the first quarter.

The Blazers then went on a 16-play drive that took more than six minutes off the clock. The drive ended in a field goal. Alabama-Birmingham’s defense was able to hold North Texas running back Deandre Torrey to 15 rushing yards in the first half. Fine threw his second touchdown pass of the day to wide receiver Jalen Darden for 11 yards. The Blazers defense had not allowed a 200 yard passer this season.

Alabama-Birmingham answered back later in the first quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run by Spencer Brown. Fine then connected with Jalen Darden once more for a 24-yard touchdown pass — his third of the game.

At the end of the first half, Fine had thrown for 213 yards and three touchdowns, making him the first quarterback to pass for 200 yards against the Blazers defense this season. North Texas ended the half leading by a score of 21-10.

The Mean Green held Brown to 23 yards on 11 carries and a goal line touchdown. During the third quarter, the Blazers sacked Fine for a safety in the end-zone. Alabama-Birmingham then drove to record Brown’s second touchdown of the night.

The Blazers scored once more and took the lead after holding North Texas to a three-and-out with Brown making that his third score of the game.

The Blazers scored 16 unanswered points in the second half, and the Mean Green did not score again in the second half. Brown logged his ninth career 100-yard game with three touchdowns.

The Blazers’ 29-10 victory left them at the top the C-USA Western division, and the loss set North Texas back to 2-2 in conference play.
