North Texas swimming and diving gears up for season

It’s that time of year again.

The Mean Green swimming and diving team is back in the pool, and preparing for the season.

North Texas finished the season in fourth place at the Conference USA meet last year, leaving a bitter taste in the mouths of many. With seven returning freshman and one year of experience under their belts, the Mean Green are confident they will make a splash in 2016.

“This group is really special,” head coach Brittany Roth said. “ We have a lot of young swimmers. What’s really fun is our senior class. They’ve been through an entire transformation from their freshman year. So I’m excited to watch them lead this young group.”

The top returning swimmer from last year’s C-USA championships is junior Claudia Kitching.

Kitching got second in the 200-yard breast stroke and third in the 100-yard breast stroke. After finishing last season strong, Kitching is ready to step up and embrace a leadership role.

“If they have any questions I can just help them through whatever they need,” Kitching said. “I want to really help encourage them throughout their whole sets, and just be there for them if they need me.”

The Mean Green are preparing for their first competitive meet on Sept. 24, which will be held in Denton. For the next three weeks, the team will continue its rigorous training process, with senior captain Abby Imes guiding them every step of the way.

“I think for the most part we need to work on our unity as a whole,” Imes said. “Getting out of the mindset that this is an individual sport, because when you’re in club and you’re younger, it kind of is. When you get here, it’s more about your team, how can you push your teammates, how can you help them, it’s all about helping other people.”

This will be Imes’ first year as team captain, and stepping into a leadership role with a young team will be one of the keys to success.

“I’m not here to be their moms,” Imes said. “We’re all in college. They should know what they’re supposed to be doing. I’m here as more of a guide to help lift other people up, and to help them reach their potential for the season.”

With Kitching hoping to build on a strong end to 2015 and a large number of underclassmen, Roth believes her team has plenty of potential.

“When the majority of your team is younger, it makes everyone that’s a junior or a senior step up to help guide them, and help channel that talent,” Roth said.
