Mean Green Swimming and Diving hosted its first regular season home meet at the Polh Rec Center against the University of Incarnate Word and Liberty University.

Prior to the meet, North Texas held a 5-0 all-time record against UIW and competed against Liberty for the first time in school history. The home team would go to 6-0 all-time against UIW with a 167-76 score and would fall to Liberty 140-102.

The Mean Green got to a fast start in the meet’s first event. North Texas came in second and third in the first heat of the 200-yard medley relay and won the second heat, only to come in second place at 1:47.92 to Liberty’s 1:47.28 first-place time.

The swim team’s lone event win came in the 200-yard freestyle.

Sophomore Isabelle Morris and freshman Katie Moore swam the best times for the Mean Green in the meet’s third event. Morris took first place with a time of 1:52:65, and Moore came in sixth at 1:56:89.

The Toronto, Ontario native feels great about winning the 200 freestyle for North Texas.

“That race was good for me to see how fast I can go in-season,” Morris said. “I really pushed myself to the end to get my time down.”

The squad’s first home meet fell on head coach Brendon Bray’s birthday. The third-year Mean Green coach enjoyed a red velvet cupcake after the meet to celebrate another year of life and another season of North Texas swimming and diving.

“We made another step forward, raced really well and came in ready to go,” Bray said. “We knew Liberty and Incarnate Word were going to be really tough tests for us. We’ve improved a lot more than where we were a year ago.”

Senior Sarah Manning swam in her first regular season meet in two years after red-shirting last season. The Texas Christian University transfer placed fourth in the 200 backstroke and seventh in the 200 freestyle.

“The team swam really well considering how hard we’ve been working,” she said. “We’re showing a lot of potential so early in the season.”

Across the street at the Physical Education Building, junior Samantha Scheck won the three-meter diving event and senior Jasmine Abercrombie came in second at both the three-meter and one-meter events.

North Texas Swimming and Diving’s next test comes in two weeks when the Mean Green hit the road to take on Texas A&M in College Station.
