The North Texas Daily won three on-site awards and placed third for Best in Show at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association competition in Fort Worth. The competition took place on April 4 and 5, and awards were presented to winners in each category on April 6.

UNT’s six competitors were almost entirely North Texas Daily editors, with the exception of broadcast journalism senior Jarah Wright.

On-site accolades included first place for journalism senior Nadia Hill in critical review and third place for journalism sophomore Joshua Friemel in radio news writing. Pre-English sophomore James Rambin placed second in off-site headline writing.

“I really didn’t expect to win first place,” Hill said. “I have only been editing this semester, so I haven’t gotten to write as much lately.”

Rambin, views editor for the North Texas Daily, said he felt privileged to take part in the competition.

“As an English major, I didn’t think I could compete on the same level as journalists,” Rambin said. “But it turns out that these events were a great opportunity to take part in, no matter what your major is.”

NT Daily faculty adviser Kathie Hinnen was delighted with the strong showing.

“Several of the students were competing in areas new to them and they did very well,” she said. “Head-to-head competition is always a great learning experience that will help them grow as journalists.”

But Hinnen noted that two days of competition is not a full measure of the staff’s efforts and skills.

“I am more impressed with how hard all the students work  every single day to serve their UNT community as well as they possibly can,” she said.
