With its highest offensive output of the season, the Mean Green women’s basketball team took over in a 74-55 win against Florida Atlantic University in the Super Pit Thursday night.

After a slow first five minutes playing from behind, the North Texas took over the game and never gave up its lead. The team outscored the Owls 39-27 in the first half and followed that with an equally strong second half, outscoring Florida Atlantic 35-28.

The team shot 45.7 percent from the floor and 62.5 percent from the three-point line. The team also out-rebounded FAU and had eight steals. Head coach Mike Petersen said he liked the team’s confidence on offense.

Shooting a strong 45.7 field goal percentage, and 62.5 three point percentage, Mean Green showed off its offensive potential. Defensively, they almost doubled the amount of rebounds of the opposing Owls and came up with eight steals.

“When you start making them the rim just gets bigger, and I just thought we caught the ball shot-ready and shot the ball with no fear,” Petersen said.

The team was led by senior guard BreAnna Dawkins who had 24 points on 10 of 17 shooting, along with 13 total rebounds through 36 minutes of playing time.

“It’s just like coach said we have to have energy,” Dawkins said. “For the last couple of games we haven’t been having any, so it was just going in the game with energy and just getting out there and fighting.”

Junior forward Acheil Tac led the team in rebounds with 14, five of those coming off offensive boards, and was second on the team with 11 points. Even with the great individual performance she said the whole team worked well as a unit.

“My teammates were kind of helping me out by blocking out, so I had an easier go to the basket,” Tac said.

Next up for the Mean Green is another home game against Florida International University on on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. and the team will look to win consecutive games for the first time this season.
