Besides having the first basket of the game, North Texas was behind Old Dominion University the entire game Thursday night, losing its fourth straight game 65-48. The Mean Green (8-13, 3-8) was defeated by the Monarchs (11-12, 7-4) last season 70-48, showing a bit of deja vu.
The first quarter foreshadowed a grim outcome for the Mean Green when Old Dominion had 14 unanswered points, giving them an early lead of 14-2. Although the game was physical from the start, North Texas struggled the entire game to keep up. At the end of the half, the Mean Green trailed 37-13, its biggest halftime deficit of the season.

The Monarchs made it extremely challenging for North Texas on the glass, out-rebounding North Texas 48-31. The offense had troubles on their side of the ball as well, especially early on. Its 13-point first half was the lowest total in any half this season.
Junior guard Kelsey Criner was the leading scorer for the Mean Green with 11 points, the only double figure scorer for North Texas. Criner went 3-for-3 on her free throws and added five rebounds, but contributed four turnovers to the team total of 17.
Old Dominion’s Jennie Simms had nine rebounds and eight assists, leading her team. Simms is also the leading scorer in Conference USA, being the player to go to for the Monarchs all season. The 6 foot guard left no stone unturned with her constant battle by the net, but was held to just 14 points, well under her 20.2 season average. She scored only one three-pointer out of her five attempts.

The Mean Green increased its total three-pointers to 100 on the season after Criner provided her second of the night. Adams and Ellison each had one as well with Kasiney Williams being the fifth.
The next C-USA battle for the Mean Green will be against the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on Saturday, Feb. 13 at the Super Pit. Tip-off is at 2:00 p.m.
