It’s time to bring baseball back to Denton.

Last week, the Denton Record-Chronicle reported that a committee formed by UNT was making progress in bringing a baseball team to the school.

The arrival of the sport has been rumored to be looming for almost a decade now. This time, though, it seems that the rumors actually have weight behind them – the university finally has money that they can put behind the project.

Without a doubt, there are some major costs that would be involved, headlined by the lack of a stadium. However, UNT owns land to build on next to the Lovelace Stadium, the softball field built in 2007 across the street from Apogee Stadium.

After years of speculation, what’s the big rush anyway? It doesn’t take a genius to realize the UNT athletic program is the basis for many jokes around campus. Fans have tuned out because of the lack of success.

In football, the team struggled again in the second year of head coach Dan McCarney’s tenure. Meanwhile, the basketball team came into the season with sky-high expectations but has barely been able to get off the ground.

There are UNT sports that are thriving, but for the average, casual Mean Green athletic supporter, those two sports are the ones that matter.

As the Mean Green prepares to move to Conference-USA next season, it finally has the attention of students. Fan are genuinely interested to see how UNT fares against the new conference opponents.

Give them what they want. Especially with the recent success of the Texas Rangers, baseball is as popular as it has ever been in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Figure out the money, figure out the stadium and set an official date for baseball’s arrival. Obviously, it’s going to be several years down the road, but giving an official announcement will get the desired buzz.

It’s worth a few late nights in the office to solve the complications and make the necessary arrangements.

Baseball and Conference-USA could combine for a momentous swing for UNT athletics that the school hasn’t seen in years, even topping the 2010 men’s basketball tournament team.

It’s time to get students and fans excited about the UNT Athletics program once again.

It’s time to bring baseball back to Denton.
