The Mean Green women’s basketball team lost on the road at the University of Alabama at Birmingham 74-40 on Thursday night.

North Texas (3-18, 2-8) went into halftime down 12 points. It didn’t get any better for the Mean Green in the second half as UAB came out of the gates hot, going on a 7-0 run that proved to be too much for a Mean Green team without senior forward Briesha Wynn.

“They went on a run to start the second half and we didn’t compete,” head coach Mike Petersen said. “We just didn’t compete down the stretch and that cost us.”

North Texas, typically able to hang its hat on its defense, gave up 74 points on 51 percent shooting. Sophomore guard Candice Adams said the team failed to execute on defense.

“Our rotations were slow and we weren’t focused.” Adams said. “That hurt us.”

The Mean Green struggled on offense, shooting 30 percent from the field and going 1 of 11 from the free throw line.

“We missed 20 layups tonight.” Petersen said “And what’s worse is we shot nine percent from the free throw line. Nine percent. Free throw shooting is an individual accountability thing. I can’t go out there and shoot free throws for them. We’ve struggled all year to make our free throws in practices and in games. That really showed tonight.”

Being without Wynn didn’t help matters for North Texas. Adams, the only member of North Texas in double figures, led the team with 10 points, while senior guard BreAnna Dawkins had nine. Dawkins said she tried to help lead the way despite Wynn’s absence.

“I just shot the ball more when they gave it to me.” Dawkins said. “I just go out there and try to make shots.”

Adams said the only thing the Mean Green can do is look toward the next game.

“The only way we go is forward.” Adams said.

The Mean Green will travel to Middle Tennessee State University on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
