President Neal Smatresk will address the university on Sept. 17 in the first-ever State of the University speech.

The presentation will begin at 3 p.m. in Winspear Performance Hall in the Murchison Performing Arts Center. There will be a reception in the lobby following the speech. The address will last about 45 minutes.

Not only are students and staff invited, but Smatresk said external community members, the Board of Regents and guests from the UNT System will also attend.

“I think every president should update the community at least once a year, if not more often,” Smatresk said. “But also, it is part of how we are going to show people that we are goal-oriented. That we don’t just talk about things, that we get things done.”

Smatresk was the president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas before replacing V. Lane Rawlins last February. Smatresk said he did the State of the University address at UNLV and decided to bring it to UNT.

“It gave me a chance to tell the whole university community what had happened in the previous year, and what our plans were for the upcoming year,” he said. “And at times to point to bold new directions.”

With the UNT’s plans for growth, Smatresk aims to direct and announce UNT’s plan for the future. The recent budget issue will be of topic as well.
