Presidents address students, say learning our responsibility

In his final speech as UNT president, V. Lane Rawlins said students need to take charge of their education at the Student Government Association’s State of the Student Body address on Tuesday morning.
“In this world, you really have to be engaged,” he said. “You’re told to accomplish a task, and you need to have the initiative and the knowledge to do that.”
Student body president Zachary Brown, vice president Anthony Brown, SGA advisor Melissa McGuire and senator Adam Hasley also spoke, delivering similar messages.
Hasley said the old model of fact-retention learning is outdated. Rawlins said the university is moving to teach critical thinking and team building skills by requiring internships and mentorships in some programs, but the real impetus is on students.
Hasley also said students should demand more from UNT and accelerate these changes.
“I’m always discouraged when I hear people say college is a test of endurance,” he said. “Our apathy is encouraging the university to remain stagnant.”
Rawlins emphasized that tuition will probably go up, and students have to make certain they are getting an education worth the price by being involved on campus and taking education beyond the classroom.
In his portion of the address, Zachary Brown said his administration has been working hard to get student feedback and solve students’ problems. He said the biggest task SGA will try to get done before his tenure ends is extending bus hours that go to local apartments later into the evening.
The SGA address comes in the wake of a mass email from senator Shamaal Fletcher petitioning to impeach Brown and vice president Anthony Brown.
