Previous owner Bill Patterson to buy Denton Record-Chronicle by end of year
Bill Patterson, publisher of the Denton Record-Chronicle, will buy the local newspaper from A.H. Belo Corporation by the end of 2017.
A.H. Belo Corporation also owns the Dallas Morning News and purchased the Denton Record-Chronicle in 1999. Before then, the paper was owned by the Patterson family.
Patterson expressed interest in buying the Record-Chronicle a few months ago and formally announced the sale Tuesday afternoon.
The Record-Chronicle reported the sale came after Belo leaders became aware strategies that worked for the Dallas Morning News weren’t as effective at the smaller Denton-based publication.
The Record-Chronicle has been serving the Denton area since 1903 and has only had two families own the paper before A. H. Belo Corporation purchased it. Previously, the Patterson family owned the paper since 1945.
