People in Denton are joining international outcry against “Return of Kings,” a self-proclaimed “neomasculinist” group whose leader has called for the legalization of rape on private property, for planning a private meeting Saturday for “hetereosexual men” at locations throughout the world — including the Denton Square and surrounding bars.

Multiple Denton authorities are aware of the group’s plans for the secret meeting. The group’s leader, Daryush Valizadeh, has garnered a reputation for his stance on rape laws, and has allegedly cancelled the planned meet ups as of Wednesday.

Texas Woman’s University issued a community email acknowledging the possible meeting, as have the Denton police, who tweeted Wednesday saying plans are being readied for protests. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sounded off Wednesday.

“This pathetic group and their disgusting viewpoints are not welcome in Texas,” Abbot said. “I’ve spent much of my career protecting women from such vile and heinous acts, and it won’t be any different on my watch as governor.”

#ThisIsNotDenton, a social media movement formed by UNT student Christina Bridges, is one of three responding and planning to protest RoK. Bridges also created a filter for Facebook and Twitter profile pictures for people to show support against the RoK . Bridges encourages all protesters to be safe.

We need to be safe while doing active work against this group in the Denton Square,” Bridges said. “Because of the dangers set in place, we have to make sure we are doing this the best way possible. It’s very possible these people might fire at us.”

For students worried about being alone on campus this week, UNT does offer an e-Ride Shuttle service available from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. to students with a valid student ID. To use the service, call 940-565-3014 and the shuttle should arrive in around 10 minutes.
