New this year to UNT’s Faculty Mentor Program is the Women’s Faculty Network, a program designed to mentor tenured and tenure-track women faculty members through the ranks at UNT.

The program is funded for one year by a mentoring grant from the Provost’s Office.

“Among women faculty, there are only 24-and-a-half percent that are full professors,” said psychology professor Linda Marshall, co-author of the WFN grant. “We are hoping to change it from not only a one-time thing. We want to create an ongoing organization and identify the future leaders of tomorrow.”

Mentors in the program are on hand to assist up-and-coming women faculty members.

One of these qualified mentors is Sheri Broyles, another co-author of the WFN grant and interim chair of the department of strategic communications.

She completed her doctorate qualifications while raising two children.

“When I started teaching here, I had a two-year-old and a five-year-old,” Broyles said. “I can talk to other women who are in that situation and tell them how I did it. You can do it all.”

WFN held a luncheon Oct. 5 to connect the women in the program and create an opportunity for people in the program to get to know each other.

About 106 women attended the event, where lecturers spoke about the program and what they hope to achieve.

The next event, at 3 p.m. on Nov. 13 in the Silver Eagle Suite at the University Union, is open to all tenure and tenure-track women faculty members.
