More than 12,000 zombies, Stormtroopers and other fantastical fans flocked to the Irving Convention Center this weekend for Dallas Comic Con’s Sci-Fi Expo, to meet their favorite comic book creators, television and film actors and actresses, including Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson of “Back to the Future” (1985).

Devin Pike, who studied journalism at UNT for two years, works as a producer at Invodo in Carrollton, making e-commerce videos for Fortune 500 companies.

He’s been an entertainment writer since 1984 and also works as a digital media manager for the Dallas Film Society.

Pike hosted four of the media guest Q&A panels, including Edward James Olmos, Tricia Helfer and James Callis of “Battlestar Galactica”; Danai Gurira and Amy Bell of AMC’s hit TV series “The Walking Dead”; Morena Baccarin of “Firefly,” an American space-western drama series created by Joss Whedon; and Glenn Morshower of “Transformers” and “24”.

The North Texas Daily spoke with Pike before Sci-Fi Expo commenced and asked him about why the science fiction genre has such a special place in fans’ hearts.

Why do you think people are so drawn to the sci-fi genre?

“Any number of reasons – escapism, fun stories, over-the-top performances, high drama. I’ve been a fan of sci-fi from a really young age and I think it’s a lot easier to suspend disbelief at that age and keep going. Cynicism and sci-fi don’t tend to mix. Maybe it’s a hope for a more positive future.”

When did the genre first make an impact in your life?

“I enjoyed it as a young kid, but my dad took me to watch “Star Wars” at the old NorthPark in Dallas the week after it came out, which would be early June, 1977. The screen at that theater was enormous – the current version of the NorthPark theaters are much smaller. The opening sequence of that film hit me like a brick. I was hooked, not just on sci-fi, but filmmaking in general.”

Which guest panel are you most excited about conducting?

“The “Battlestar Galactica” conversation. I think Olmos is a tremendously talented actor and it’ll be really difficult to keep my questions about “Miami Vice” and “Blade Runner” curbed. Helfer is a stunning beauty and has a really amazing acting range as well. Callis is a real character and I have a few surprises in store for him.”

What’s the most bizarre question that you’ve heard a fan ask a guest?

“It’s really entertaining when folks will ask highly intricate plot and character questions of the guests. More times than not, though, the actors are really up to the task.”

What is or has been the most rewarding feeling about being a part of this event?

“Regardless of the nature of what you’re into, as a fan – movies, TV, comics, cosplay, art, models, whatever – events like Sci-Fi Expo allow you to not only get closer to the people that make the things you enjoy, but meet other people who are into the same exact thing. Being a part of that is about as rewarding as you can imagine.”

Fans will have another opportunity to dress up when Dallas Comic Con returns to the Irving Convention Center on May 17-19. Trekkies take note, as William Shatner will be one of the many guests attending.
