The Mean Green Women’s Volleyball team hosted its annual preseason Green & White scrimmage on Saturday night.

Head coach Andrew Palileo kicked off the festivities by taking the time to speak directly to the fans about various things the team has worked on this offseason. He said their main focus has been to improve on serving, a key component that caused a midseason losing streak last season.

“You guys may think I didn’t hear, but every time last season I heard when someone in the crowd would yell ‘You missed a serve,’” Palileo said. “We have worked all spring and summer to improve that.”

After an interactive segment in which a few family members took the court to practice serving with the players, the team split and began scrimmaging.

Ironically, both sides missed their first serve of the set, but play settled down from there. The white team jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the first of a two set match. Freshman outside hitter Hannah Shaw had a productive first set, tallying five points, one dig and six blocks.

It was not enough, however, as the green team, led by senior Conference USA Player of the Year Carnae Dillard, stormed back and tied the game at 20 before taking the set 25-23. Sophomore defensive specialist Meredith Bramer had three key serves to end the first set that were a turning point in the rally.

“[Bramer] won them the game,” associate coach Vinh Nguyen said. “She really bullied them on those last three serves. She can be absolutely deadly.”

The green team dominated the second set, with a few members of the white team looking flustered after missed digs and bumps. Green would go on to win this set 25-21 and sweep the match. Despite the loss, Shaw had yet another productive game, ending the night with nine points, one dig and seven blocks.

“I really wanted to come out here and compete, give Carnae a run for her money.” Shaw said. “She’s someone I look up to and want to model my game after. This was my first time putting on a UNT jersey and was pretty fired up.”

Other Notes

  •  The team consistently put three players at the front of the net to block incoming attacks. Often times this strategy succeeded in quickly sending the ball back, but it also made the defense vulnerable in the middle. The opposition frequently realized the opening and took advantage of three players crowding the net.
  • Dillard was adamant after the game that her goal for this season is to make it to the NCAA tournament. “I don’t care if I am not C-USA player of the year,” Dillard said. “I want to get a ring and I want to be in that tournament.”
  • The team opens the season with seven straight road games, and won’t play in Denton until September 7th when they will welcome the University of Alabama Birmingham to kick off C-USA play. “Getting in a rhythm is probably the biggest thing playing on the road,” Dillard said. “We have to stay patient and not get anxious.”
