The Denton County Mental Health and Mental Retardation Center will host the Race for Hope 5K run and 1-mile walk this Saturday at South Lakes Park in observance of Suicide Prevention Month.

Race for Hope is meant to increase awareness of mental illness and suicide and help the families of those who are affected by mental illnesses, according to MHMR Director Pam Gutierrez.

“The greatest thing we can tell people is that there is hope and there is help,” Gutierrez said. “As a society, when we see someone in distress, we often walk away, but it is helpful to know that there are people who want to help.”

MHMR is a local outpatient mental health and developmental disabilities center. Its services include outpatient psychiatric services, skills training, a crisis hotline, specialized therapies and community support. Proceeds from the race will go toward suicide awareness literature and the annual Holiday Helping Hands program at the center, which provides gifts to families who would not otherwise receive them, said representative Monica Younkman.

In March, MHMR opened a psychiatric triage center in Denton in order to provide 24-hour service for those affected by mental illness. The triage center focuses on local residents who otherwise would not get psychiatric help during crisis situations.

President of Denton County’s chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness Esther Fidler said the triage center allows for more people to receive help in an effective way.

“Every year, larger cities like Dallas and Fort Worth receive funding, but during a crisis, our police couldn’t take people across county lines,” Fidler said. “So when people were in crisis, they were taken to jail instead of the hospital.”

Online registration for Race for Hope will end at 4 p.m. on Thursday. The 5K will start at 8 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the 1-mile walk at 8:10 a.m. South Lakes Park is located at 556 Hobson Lane in Denton.
