The last time UNT squared off with the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, the Mean Green marched up and down the field, scoring 59 points and notching 464 rushing yards.

It was the game where former running back Lance Dunbar broke Patrick Cobbs’ school rushing record with 4,244 career rushing yards – 313 of which came in the game against the Blue Raiders.

It was senior day, the last game of the 2011 season, and it brought the Mean Green’s record to 5-7 on the year, while MTSU sat near the bottom of the Sun Belt at 2-10.
This year, when UNT (3-4) and MTSU (4-3) face off against each other, both are 2-1 in the conference, and there is much more on the line.

“It didn’t really mean anything last year,” senior offensive lineman Coleman Feeley said. “This year the Sun Belt is wide open. Every game is a playoff game, pretty much, and this one is as big as any we will play.”

The Mean Green will be taking on a much-improved Blue Raider team, and just the same, UNT is showing signs of being a better team as compared to last year, head coach Dan McCarney said.

Like last week’s matchup with Louisiana-Lafayette, this game will be one of the pivotal moments of the season for UNT.

“We go into this game with a lot to play for, no question about it,” McCarney said. “We’re going into the last Saturday of October and there’s a lot on the table for both of these teams, and that’s what makes it fun and exciting for coaches and players alike.”

The team expects MTSU to be looking for revenge Saturday, but said that it has prepared the same way as it has for every other game this season.

“If you need motivation to play each Saturday, you’re in the wrong sport,” redshirt junior quarterback Derek Thompson said. “What they do is their thing, but we’re going to take the same approach we do every week.”

The Mean Green is coming off what junior defensive end Brandon McCoy called a “signature win” for the team as they downed ULL 30-23 on Oct. 16 with a roaring second-half comeback led by key defensive stops.

Junior linebacker Zach Orr, who had nine tackles and an interception in the game with ULL, was named SBC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
The team hopes that the momentum from the last win on national TV transfers over to Saturday’s game.

“To get a win from a great team, that just gives us momentum that we can be at the top of this conference if we wanted to,” McCoy said. “It got us over the hump. We were down, and we dug deep and came back get that win. We needed that win to catapult us into greatness.”

Kickoff will take place at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Floyd Stadium in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

The game can be seen on ESPN3 and heard on KNTU 88.1 FM and KHYI 95.3 FM.
