The Editorial Board

On Thursday, The Editorial Board of the North Texas Daily penned an editorial titled “Letter to SGA: #MakeUNTGreatAgain.” The piece was a close look at what the experience of the Daily has been in covering UNT student government and what we believe the organization should do to better serve the students they represent. We asked questions such as “Do you have any idea who the Student Government Association senator is that represents your college?” and “It’s all fine and well to invite students to the SGA echo chamber, but what about actually getting stuff done?”

The piece was met with strong response both positively and negatively. For perspective: since the first ever newspaper was introduced in 1704, one of the jobs of a publication has been to keep a watchful eye on the government and make our comments known should we feel a group is being unfulfilled in its promises to those it represents (also our readership). Nothing we write is meant to be hateful or libelous, merely a close criticism, meant to brush away pride and pettiness for actual change.

Here’s what happened:

This tweet from SGA president Adam Alattry was removed after it was posted:

Though we are funded by the Student Services Fee, the Daily remains an independent entity from the University of North Texas. As with college newspapers around the country, we exist to serve our readership, the students, not the university. So the notion that we represent UNT is false.

We can answer that one. The Editorial Board consists of Nicholas Friedman, Dalton LaFerney, Erica Wieting, Kristen Watson, Meagan Sullivan, Scott Sidway and Harrison Long. You can find all of their contact information here.

As with all letters to the Daily, we are more than happy to publish them. This kind of response is what we look for when we write an editorial and encourage all readers to write us and voice their opinion. Read SGA’s full open letter here.

Some requests were a tad unrealistic:

Who would pay for it?

Others agreed with the editorial and spoke their minds:

Thanks, Stephon. We appreciate you too.

Even SGA senator Tiffany Miller reached out to us not to defend SGA, but to find a productive path forward:

And lastly, some felt protective of the #MakeUNTGreatAgain slogan:
